LinkedIn used to be known as your online CV, and a place to search for jobs; and it still is, to an extent.

In South Africa, we have very high unemployment (around 27% at the moment) but we also have ridiculous opportunity.

To the topic of my post – how can you address the challenge of being unemployed? What power do you as an individual hold, in today’s hyper-connected business world?

In a couple of words: the internet (more specifically, LinkedIn)

Here are 4 things you can do on LinkedIn, starting today, which will help you find your next job.

  1. Make sure your profile is top-notch. Check out this resource for details.
  2. Connect with people in the industry in which you’d like to work. You’d be surprised how many people accept connection requests if you simply ask nicely.
  3. Position yourself as a thought leader. Create and curate content which is relevant to the industry in which you’d like to work. Potential employers may notice you and may approach you directly.
  4. Add value and be helpful. Engage with other people’s posts. Add comments and advice, share interesting content and give valuable input.

If you spend time each day doing these 4 things, you’ll grow your network and be exposed to so many opportunities. Potential employers are scouring the internet, looking for the best people, so do yourself a favor and do what you can to stand out from the crowd.

Do you agree?
